Recently published in Institute Magazine, this editorial came out of a rambling conversation that started on calligraphy, moved through the angular FW15 hair on the Yohji Yamamoto runway, and ended in industrial development, mined land and juxtaposing ideas of "pollution" and "purity". You just never know when the idea for an editorial is going to seed itself!
Make up artist Xoë Kingsley and hair stylist Hannah DeFrateschi worked with wardrobe stylist Alexandra Greenhill to create an atypical natural beauty. Nostalgic girlish tropes like a rosy cheek and pale clear skin were subverted with playful finishes gesturing to coal and diamonds. Model Anna's long titian hair was heat slick and frizzed. Silhouettes were disrupted textures of black creating something soft and readable as hard all the same. Pitched under the title "Black Hole", the set was published as an Institute Style feature. The set was shot on a coffee Colorama backdrop by photographer Olly Hearsey, using Profoto 1000w D1 Airs and a Nikon D800E.
